Our carbon monoxide alarm went off at 4 am on Monday morning.  This was the first time the alarm had gone off (we’ve had the CO units for about 2 years), and our digital readout was showing ~250 ppm (bad!).  Fortunately, the alarm did it’s job & we quickly left the house (although not before opening most of the doors and windows – which, in retrospect, we shouldn’t have spent time doing).  The local fire department came to investigate & a few hours later we were allowed back inside.  Our wood stove was the likely source of the carbon monoxide & we have negative house pressure issues that are not helping the situation.  An HVAC tech is coming by today to look at the problems & hopefully propose a solution.  Even though this ended well for us, I can’t stress the importance of a CO alarm.   If we did not have a functioning alarm, we all would have continued to sleep through the rising CO levels (very dangerous!).

What a week!  I meant to have these photos up by Wednesday, but here we are on Friday morning and I am just managing to now carve out a little blog time.  For better, or for worse, my week has been incredibly work-busy (as opposed to the more-fun vacation-busy!).

Shoes:  Rachel Roy Ronney {also here and here}
Clutch:  Banana Republic
Necklace:  J.Crew Factory |{similar here and here}

For some reason, I look especially sour in these photos.  Not sure why…I really liked this outfit.  The back of the blouse has some neat layering detail, although unfortunately I didn’t manage to get a decently in-focus shot.

I bought this skirt during a brave moment a few weeks back, and I am surprised how much I actually like it.  It’s a little outside my comfort zone, but also surprisingly wearable.

Necklace:  Gorjana
Purse:  Pour la Victoire
Sandals:  J.Crew back zip sandals

We are having an unseasonably cool August.  As a result, I have been bundling up more than normal.  While I am not impressed at what appears to be an early fall, I know the dogs are loving the cooler temperatures…  I suppose that can be the silver lining…

Unfortunately, since is has also rained on-and-off every day this week, I was unable to watch the Perseid meteor showers (clouds blocking the view).  This is normally one of my favorite summer rituals –  I can spend hours watching the night sky.  It really grounds me – makes me realize how we are part of something so much larger.

Dress (worn as a top):  SheInside
Skirt:  J.Crew Factory
Sunglasses:  Aldo
Bracelets:  Jacob
Purse:  Banana Republic {old}
Shoes:  Arturo Chiang Beatrixx

I loved the look of this SheInside dress online, however when it arrived, it was WAY to short.  Even my most daring self could not pull off such a short dress (keep in mind I am nearly 6’ tall).  Instead, it has been re-purposed as a top.  The quality is pretty decent for the price (I find SheInside can be hit-or-miss with regards to quality).

Silk stripe blouse:  Club Monaco {picked up during a sale in May}
Skirt:  J.Crew Factory long pencil skirt {this color came out last fall, but I waited until it moved to the clearance section & snatched it up during an extra % off sale a few months ago!  Loving the rich yellow color}.  Find the J.Crew retail version here
Sunglasses:  Aldo Agrayssa {Cdn link here}
Bracelets:  Amrita Singh
Purse:  Banana Republic {from a few years back}
Shoes:  Pour la Victoire Carmendy {also here and here}

My work-wear has been under-represented on the blog recently, so I made a conscious effort to snap a few photos yesterday morning before heading to work.

On an unrelated note, I just found out someone else has recently started a personal style blog with the name Laura Wears.  Initially I was a little peeved, but to be honest, I have been contemplating a blog name change for a few months.  Perhaps this is the push I need to actually commit to a new blog name…

For those in Canada – I hope you had a great Victoria Day long weekend 🙂  I spent most of the weekend either getting the garden ready, or prepping the basement walls for painting.  The latter was especially time-consuming because the previous home owners who did an absolutely TERRIBLE job when painting the basement (I’m talking about dried paint drips on the walls, awful crack-filling that has left us with bumpy walls (wtf?), getting paint on the baseboards, handrails, doors, ceiling, etc…).  I am trying my best to repair their mistakes, which is why the prepping stage has taken so long.
This will be the new paint color (when I finally get around to painting…) – I am hoping it will be an upgrade form the current mustard yellow walls (I normally like mustard yellow, but it’s just not working in our basement…).
